It’s All About the Beach Waves

Over the coming weeks, I will be bringing you tips, tricks and quick tutorials on how to achieve the most from your hair for Summer ’14.

Today I thought I would make my feature all about beach waves.  Loose, messy hair is a statement look for the coming season, but also something which won’t fall to pieces if you get caught in a shower, which lets be honest, is always a possibility, even on the nicest of days!

This is a simple and easy style to suit every hair type and length.

The trick is not to dry your hair completely, and also do not use a brush to dry it at all!   I hear you all screaming … BUT THE FRIZZ … The frizz is easily tamed ladies, I kid you not!  Read on..

Over heating creates frizz, so it is key that you catch your hair at around 80% dry to achieve the perfect finish, no matter what result your working towards.

My hair is fine and damaged, and so, turns to fluff very easily.  I achieve my beach waves by adding a thickening lotion to my roots and massaging my scalp in circular motions to create volume, while my hairdryer is on medium heat/medium speed settings.  I then quickly blast the mid lengths and ends to 80% dry, spray it down with a few pumps of sea salt spray (I’ll include a little guide on how to make your own below), and quickly twist a few thick sections.  The salt will set a wave into your hair, so give it 5 minutes or so before shaking it all out and scrunching some texturiser throughout.  This gives the perfect messy finish.

The key is in the products. I am completely obsessed with the Kevin Murphy range at the minute.  The styling products are amazing.  For some root volume when creating a messy wave, (or to thicken up my hair for a blowdry), I use Anti-Gravity, which is an oil free thickening cream.  I use a DIY Salt Spray, and then finish with Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Beach Texturiser, which comes in a cream and a spray, but I personally prefer the cream as it allows you to really work the product into the hair.

For thicker hair, try applying some smoothing serum before your salt spray.  For very curly hair, try adding some straightening cream or smoothing cream to weigh the hair down and relax the curl before creating your wave.

I’ll leave you all with a very simple DIY Salt Spray recipe, so please do let me know how you get on if you try the quick guide above.  Or, if you have any questions just leave a comment below.
