The Messed Up Top Knot

This is by far, one of the easiest looks to create, and works for all seasons and outfits!

Prep your hair by creating a wave, either using a sea spray, ghd or wand. Make sure the wave is loose and natural looking.

Mess it up with a texturiser. I use Hair Resort Spray, by Kevin Murphy which helps the mess immensely without making the hair sticky.

  • Pull the hair back into a loose ponytail, at whichever level you want it to sit.
  • Back comb the ponytail lightly, with a wide tooth comb to create more fullness.
  • Using a wide tooth comb causes body and not frizz. You don’t want a birds nest effect so gently does it.
  • You need to keep some structure in the hair for wrapping.
  • Next, begin winding the ponytail around the bobbin, placing 5-10 random clips to hold the bun in place.
  • Don’t overuse the clips, or wind the hair too tightly, as you want to keep the messy look.
  • When all of the ponytail has been clipped up, scrunch the hair with your fingers to toss and loosen.
  • When you have your top knot secure, place your fingers on the scalp around the front sections of the hair and massage in a circular motion. This will loosen the hair from the scalp.
  • Finish with another spritz of texturiser.

You can also add single strip, elastic headbands for a casual look. Or, a half-head chain, which can be placed around the back, underneath the bun, for a dressier effect.

That’s it!  Simple.
