Q&A with Blank Canvas Cosmetics

Anyone that follows my Facebook page or website will know how much I love the Blank Canvas Cosmetics brand.  Una the brains behind the brand recently did a Q&A with the Mary O’Donnell Beauty followers to find out about the company and the new additions to the brand that they have just launched.

“Why the name Blank Canvas?”

This was a no brainer for me.  My first love is art.  Make up for me is a unique form of art and a great way to express yourself and your personality.  The face is a Blank Canvas.

“I don’t own any brushes. What brushes do I need to get started?”

You don’t need a large amount at the start and it’s definitely better to get used to 4/5 first instead of being overwhelmed by a lot of brushes that you’ll end up casting aside because you don’t know how to use them.  There are so many online tutorials nowadays that you can learn from.  Our 5 piece set contains the F20, F21, E26, E27 and E30 which is a great Starter/Travel Set and retails for €44.99 click here

“Do you have a page where it shows what the different shape brushes are for as I was given make up brushes and not a clue what half of them are for as I don’t wear too much make up?”

If you go to the link here, you can zoom up on each brush and see it’s description click here

What brush is the best multi-purpose?

Without doubt the F20 is our top selling multi-purpose. You can apply cream/liquid/gel and powder products.  It’s best used in a buffing rather than swirling motion. Can be great for cream blush as well.

“I’m planning on doing a make up artist course, what are the essentials needed for my kit?”

It’s advisable to have your own personal set and a kit for your clients for hygiene purposes.  Having a few application/placement brushes such as the E24 or E35 (new synthetic version launching on the 31st) is a must as well as some blending brushes (like the E25, E26, E32).

The E10 is one of my favourite eye blending brushes for smaller areas and creases.  We have a new brush called the E42 launching which is amazing for crease work.  Practically does the job for you.  A brow groomer and eyeliner is an essential as well as some multi-purpose face brushes, the F20, F15, F02.

For foundation, it’s always good to have a painter style like the F02 and a multi-purpose F20/F22 for buffing and finishing foundation.  The Airbrush blender is great as a finisher also and can blend over-applied foundation/blush.

A good bronzing/powder brush is a good tool to have such as the F25 as it’s synthetic and can handle large areas.
The 12 piece Face and Eye is a great all rounder as it’s enough to get you started.

“What’s the difference between natural and synthetic hair?”

In years gone by people were dubious about the quality of synthetic hair and whether it’s on par with natural hair.  Natural hair comes in many forms: goat, pony, sable, squirrel, badger.  We opted to use only goat and pony and the rest of our range is synthetic.  The quality of synthetic fibres are very superior now and can apply product very well.  One of the main advantages of synthetic fibres in a brush is that it can be used with liquid /creams and gels without wasting a lot of product.  Goat is great for blending and application and pony is fantastic for smudging products around the eye area.

“What happens if my brush sheds? “

Once you wash your brushes the first 3 times, any shedding should stop as the hairs should be sealed in place.  Goat hair is more likely to shed than synthetic fibres.  Should you have issues, with your Blank Canvas Cosmetics brushes, make sure to contact us

“What can we expect from your new launch?”

We’ve perfected so many brushes in our Pro Deluxe range and the new launches are no exception. They will include tools for precision work such as the much anticipated F30 Sculpt Brush which we pre-launched at the Irish Beauty Show and the reaction was amazing.  We also have added 10 new brushes to our vegan/synthetic range and some detailing brushes. Our multi coloured HD collection launched last week also.

“Contouring and highlighting has become really on trend now.  What brushes would you recommend for this?”

Our contour palette is one of the top sellers.  It’s complimented by the F15 , F14 and F20.  The new F30 Sculpt brush works a treat with it.

“I’m useless at contouring: Is there any quick technique?”

The figure “3” is a great one to use as a quick way to sculpt.  Starting at the forehead and bringing along the top of your ear and along the jawline.

Once I have the contouring done do I apply the foundation over it then?”

There are 2 ways of contouring:

1.  Using cream concealer or foundation and

2.  With a powder product.

For both, I’d recommend applying foundation first, if you are using a cream contour then go in with your contour brush (the F21 is great for cream and powder).  Once you’ve contoured and maybe highlighted as well, take a face blending brush such as the F20 or F22 and marry your foundation and creams together so it’s seamless and set with a finishing powder (loose or set).  If you are powder contouring, after foundation application, apply concealer wherever needed, then set with powder and then apply powder contour to sculpt and highlight.  Buff everything together with an F20 or similar for a seamless finish

“I’m a vegetarian, do you offer vegan friendly brushes?”
